The new normal...

Super typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines on Friday. Over 10,000 people are feared dead. Upon landfall, sustained winds were 195 miles/300 km per hour with gusts even higher. That’s like a 700-mile wide EF-4 or EF-5 tornado. For comparison purposes, Hurricane Sandy had wind speeds of 80 miles per hour upon landfall in Brigantine, New Jersey. Can you imagine what would have happened if such a storm would have hit the eastern US? And while we know a typhoon is not a tsunami, the effects are similar the with the strength of the storm lifting water onto land. Ironically, the strength of the storm may have saved the Philippines from even more death and destruction as the typhoon rushed through the Philippines instead of lingering around. Now it is on the way to the rest of Asia, though.

It seems fitting that even though this is the third World Series victory for Boston in the past decade, it's Uehara who finished this World Series which was the first time since 1918 Boston saw their home team win the Series at home

I am sure that his efforts are an inspiration for all of Japan. It’s nice to see a hard-working athlete like Uehara be successful. While it’s true that most professional athletes at this level are hard-working, I am sure Uehara provides inspiration to a lot of Japanese people.

And it seems fitting that Uehara made his way to Boston. With the tragedy at the Boston Marathon and tragedy in New England at Sandy Hook the previous year, I am sure that Uehara feels just as home in Boston, help lifting spirits of those in Boston and New England just as he has helped lift spirits in Japan.

So it seems fitting that Uehara who had an amazing year as the Boston closer with a 1.09 ERA and 0.59 WHIP, with 21 saves out of 24 save opportunities, ALCS MVP, 0.00 ERA in the World Series with 2 saves in 5 appearances out of 6 games, pitches the last inning of the World Series and strikes out the last batter. Even though I am from Texas and he had a solid year with Texas in 2012, hindsight being 20/20, I am sure he is glad he parted ways with Texas as Ranger manager Ron Washington never really seemed to appreciate him. Even with a 1.75 ERA last year, Washington only used him 37 times while Boston has used him twice as much this year. Through a translator, Uehara sagely comments:

“There’s no point really in worrying about stuff in the past. Those times will never come back.”

But actually, I want to move on to how Uehara ended game 4. With Boston trailing the series 2-1 and the tying run at the plate for the Cardinals, for the first time in MLB post-season history, the game ended when he picked off the baserunner.

You can click the above image for the video for MLB.

However, what’s almost as amazing is how this play sounds in Spanish!

Click the above link to hear the play in Spanish. I was just waiting for one of the announcers to say “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAALLLLLLLLLL!!!”

PS:
  • Both links above will automatically move onto the next video/sound clip at the end of the current one. You’ll need to terminate the video/soundclip yourself.
  • It would seem to me that professional announcers (referring to the video from Fox Sports) should know how to pronounce player’s names. The first announcer said “O-ahara”? There’s no “O” in his name. How did he get “O-ahara”? (And for the record, it is pronounced “U-e-hara” where “e” is pronounced like “e” in pet.)
  • Since 1918 was the last time when Boston won the World Series championship at home, Helen DcGonagle who was 2 years old at that time anxious awaits seeing the Red Sox win the series at home. Here is an interview with her: http://www.wcvb.com/news/sports/Quincy-woman-was-2-years-old-last-time-Red-Sox-won-World-Series-at-home/%2D/9848968/22721906/%2D/12kt2qf/%2D/index.html

Tokyo Jim (no relation)

While looking for a hard drive to replace the one which failed on one of my ReplayTV units, I found a hard drive where I had recorded a short called “Tokyo Jim”.

I also found it on YouTube, although the one uploaded on YouTube is of very poor video quality, it’s still funny:

Click the above image for the video. Strange, though, that the ending is completely different than what I recalled. Let’s see. Don’t I have a goal somewhere of stop being more forgetful…?

I've always known that proper sleep is an important part of one's health

and here are two recent articles proving that point.

The first article points out that waking up a times you are not used to waking up is in essence like having jet lag.

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/17/everyday-jet-lag/?partner=rss&emc=rss&_r=0

The second article points out that a reason study shows that sleep is a way for the brain to get rid of toxins in the brain.

http://io9.com/the-real-reason-why-sleep-deprivation-can-destroy-you-1447241194/@whitsongordon

Our body has our normal body functions to get rid of toxins, but our normal body functions to get rid of toxins doesn’t work for the brain… and sleep is the way for the brain to do that. It is no wonder we get headaches and feel miserable when we have a lack of sleep.

Excuse me while I go get rid of more brain poo.

In another segment that the Internet can be educational as well as entertaining...

Here are products that we’ve been using wrong…

Click the above image for the video…

But…
  1. I knew about the tab on the aluminum foil box but only because someone asked me to push in the tab.
  2. I knew about the Greek yogurt, seem natch to me.
  3. I would really wonder if the inventor of the pot holder had envisioned the hole as a spoon holder, too.
  4. I heard about the cup lid… but I would hope you’d only do that if you were planning on finishing the drink. Putting the lid back on top after it’s been in contact with a table with who knows what on it…?
  5. And same comment for using the foil as a spoon… Who knows what else has been on that lid! Yeck! In Japan, they provide plastic spoons for products like that.

By the way, here’s an article with a similar theme: http://www.buzzfeed.com/gabbynoone/18-everyday-products-youve-been-using-wrong

Here they point out if you store peanut butter upside down, the oily part gets more even distributed…

And while we’re at it, I got distracted by this video of things which are not as they appear… http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2dQTvTZ6QUg

Superman's not the only hero in town...

With all that is going on, especially politically in the US, sometimes it’s hard to find the positives going on in the world, but there are.

And heroes help make the world a better place. In this case, although not surprising to many on 43T, the hero is a dog.

Killian, a black lab and German shepherd mix, helped alert her owners that the babysitter was abusing their baby. Killian started acting aggressively toward the babysitter when the babysitter would arrive. The owners thought this was strange because Killian is normally a very personable dog. The owners decided to record what went on while they were away. They suspected that the babysitter was abusing the dog, but in fact, to their shock, they found out that the babysitter was abusing their baby!

The babysitter has pleaded guilty to assault and battery and faces one to three years in prison.

In another feel good story, a homeless man, Glen James, found a bag with over $40,000 and turned it in to the police. Obviously the owner of the bag was very relieved. As a result, someone has started an online fundraising program for James and has now raised over $45,000.

As James said, “Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a … penny of the money I found.”

Although extreme weather is becoming the new norm all around the world

Japan was hit by a dry rainy season and now parts of Japan are experiencing floods while other parts are experiencing drought.

The extreme weather has brought some strong storms, including this spectacular lightning storm in Tokyo, where lightning hit one of the commuter trains.

Noone in the train was hurt by the lightning strike.

I could have posted this under "be fluent in Japanese"

but it really doesn’t have anything to do with the Japanese language.

Someone (a half Japanese/half American living in Japan) posted a video to review a new snack product in Japan… Pepsi-flavored corn snacks! (Sort of looks like Cheetos, so you may see references to Pepsi-flavored Cheetos, but just because they look like Cheetos doesn’t mean one should call them Cheetos).

Even though he made a funny look when he took his first bite, I still want to try it!

Anyway, click the above for the video. And oh yea, the picture is not in the video and has nothing to do with the video.

Measuring your dumbness with a ruler

This video takes advantage of slow motion video to make it look like people are slow and this leads to a good discussion on brain plasticity. There is evidence to suggest it’s just a matter of training our brains, so if we exercise are brains, we can put to rest the old adage that “old dogs can’t learn new tricks”.

I wish all people would keep an open mind about learning new things, but I guess… you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Wait! Wrong saying. It goes to show that your mind is a powerful thing and if you believe you can’t learn anything… then guess what, you won’t.

Looks like this USA Today article has some suggestions of places where I can try to get some ribs...

A couple are in Dallas! And a few others in Texas, but some in places I’ve never heard of.

Anyway, looks like some candidates for me to try!

Now I just wonder when I’ll have time to try…

If you think you're having a bad day

You should see meteorologist Kristi Gordon being attacked by a giant spider:

Click the above image for a video.

OK, not really a giant spider, but a normal sized spider which happened to crawl on the webcam.

But I must say, Kristi did a good job escaping that giant spider. I’m not sure how she was able to do it. As you can see from the still above, it was practically on top of her.

I'm not sure I understand all this Tiger Woods hate going on now...

People say he should do the “honorable” thing and withdraw from the Masters.

However, here are the facts:

  • Tiger thought he made a legal drop after his ball ricocheted off the flag and into the water. Since he was playing from the position of his original shot, he should have dropped as close as possible to the original spot. Instead he dropped two yards further back.
  • During the round, thanks to the wonders of TV, the Masters Rules Committee reviewed on video what Tiger did, and decided he did not break any rules.
  • Tiger signs his score card with a score of 71.
  • Later, based on additional information from his TV interview, the Rules Committee decided he did violate Rule 26 regarding where he took his drop.
  • Tiger is then assessed a 2-stroke penalty.
  • One of the strictest rules of golf is if you sign a wrong score card, you are disqualified. Thus, in this case, with the 2-stroke penalty, Tiger shot a 73 and signed the wrong scorecard.
  • HOWEVER, two years ago, the PGA Tour amended that rule that “a penalty of disqualification may in exceptional individual cases be waived, modified or imposed if the Committee considers such action warranted.” It was known as the TV rule as they have found viewers calling in with rules infractions on players.
  • There is also another rule which says any decision by the Rules Official or Rules Committee is final.
  • So we have a situation where the Rules Committee originally ruled he did not violate the rules, but after Tiger signed the scorecard, they later decided he did. Thus, the Rules Committee decided to impose the amended rule and not disqualify Tiger.

So yes, Tiger violated the rules out of ignorance. No excuse. He was assessed a two-shot penalty for that.

The Rules Committee decided that since they had reviewed his drop previously and had initially ruled he did not violate the rules, but only came to that conclusion afterwards, they decided not to disqualify Tiger. If they had been able to come to the correct decision initially of assessing the penalty, they would have told Tiger before he signed the scorecard, so he would have signed a correct scorecard and not even be considered for disqualification.

So now everyone* (ok, about half the people if you look at the message boards across the Internet) is calling Tiger a cheater. Huh? He was ignorant of the details of the rule and he paid the penalty with two strokes. He did not intentionally break the rules because he explained what he did at the press interview which the Rules Committee used to determine he violated the rules.

Some people think he took material advantage of dropping the ball two yards further back. Yes, he took an improper drop so he paid for that with two shots. There’s no way that if he had dropped at the original spot, he would have taken any more than one more shot.

Some people say he was taking material advantage by dropping to the exact yardage he wanted for his next shot. In the rules of golf, you are allowed to drop your ball to any yardage, but to do that, the ball should be dropped at a spot in line behind the flag and the point of entry. Since the ball did not ricochet straight back at him, that means the point of entry would have been more to the side. So if he had wanted to drop for an exact yardage, he should have dropped more from the side than where he was originally.

Some people think he should withdraw as the “honorable” thing for signing an incorrect scorecard because that is what would happen under normal circumstances. Huh? The Rules Committee originally determined he did not break the rules so he was not going to be assessed a penalty and only decided after he signed his scorecard to assess the penalty. Because of that, the Rules Committee decided within the amended rules, Tiger can still play. Tiger is still following the rules and honoring the decision as set forth by the Rules Committee.

Some people say Tiger is getting special treatment. If by special treatment, you mean scrutinized, then yes. And yes, it may be true if this had happened to any other player, the other player might have been DQ’d. In this case, because of all the TV coverage on Tiger, the Rules Committee had video available to review what Tiger did during the round and they made their initial decision. Thus, with all the information they had available and originally assessed he did not violate the rules, The Rules Committee also took responsibility for not calling the penalty on Tiger initially. If that video had not been available and it was only brought to the attention to the Rules Committee after the player had signed the scorecard, then yes, the Rules Committee might have no recourse except to DQ the player.

The following is part of the statement from the Rules Committee on this matter:
The penalty of disqualification was waived by the Committee under Rule 33 as the Committee had previously reviewed the information and made its initial determination prior to the finish of the player’s round.

Some people say the Rules Committee did this as a “favor” to Tiger. Some people say if Tiger were white, he wouldn’t have gotten this advantage. Some people even imply Tiger donating money and/or bringing in money to Augusta National is the reason for the Rules Committee’s decision. It’s amazing how people will make up something to help justify their own way of thinking. All I can say about whether there are ulterior motives for the ruling is that the Augusta National board is one of the most pompous groups of men you’ll ever meet. Established in 1933, Augusta National finally admitted their first black member in 1990. They still have not admitted any women members. For these type of people, their “integrity” is considered paramount. To them, money is not above integrity.

While some people feel Tiger is given a break based on who he is, I think people are judging him unfairly for who he is.

Some people are saying that the amendment to rule 33 was not for this situation. Everyone knows that golfers, even pro golfers, as they should, try to use rules to their advantage. That is, when you get relief from the cart path or some other man-made obstruction, the rules of golf are there to allow you to get relief from the obstruction. However, pro players will take into consideration what kind of lie they have as to whether they will take relief or not. That is not supposed to be the point of the rule. The point of the rule is whether you have an obstruction or not and whether you should get relief, not whether you can have a better or worse lie after your drop. Then when you drop, you are allowed one club length from where the ball is, so you can pick the best condition possible (within one club length). Of course, all players do that. Here, Tiger thought he could be within the rules of golf for the drop, but he was wrong, so he was assessed a penalty. Then the Rules Committee determined it would not be fair to DQ him after they had made an initial assessment he had not violated the rules, so they allow him to continue to play. Tiger is playing within the rules of golf.

Some people say “What would Bobby Jones have done?” I have a different question. “What would Arnold Palmer have done?” If he were in the hunt for winning a tournament but were told after signing his scorecard, he was assessed a two-stroke penalty and thus would have normally been considered disqualified… However, the Rules Committee, within the rules of golf, determined he would be allowed to continue to play, would he have continued to play? I don’t want to speak for him, but I think the answer would have been yes… It would be interesting to see if he makes any comment on this topic. Of course, Piers Morgan says Arnold would have withdrawn. I wonder how Piers knows this.

Lawyers win again

A Calvin and Hobbes fan put together some images overlaying Calvin and Hobbes onto real photos. The lawyers told him (nicely) to take down the images because they violated Bill Watterson’s “unwavering” wishes that Calvin and Hobbes only exist in specific formats as he created them.

There is a clause in the copyright law for “fair use”. From wikipedia:

Fair use is a limitation and exception to the exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative work. In United States copyright law, fair use is a doctrine that permits limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights holders…

The first factor is regarding whether the use in question helps … stimulate creativity for the enrichment of the general public, or whether it aims to only … for reasons of personal profit.

As a side note, the creator of the images did put up a “donate” button to which he netted about $85. However, as someone who did something out of his love for Calvin and Hobbes, there’s no way he could have afforded a lawyer to go to court, so in the end, he complied with the request to take down the images.

This marks a sad day for Calvin and Hobbes…

We may have to worry if David Hasselhoff’s lawyers ever get wind of 43T.

Even the miracle pine has died...

In the city of Rikuzentakata, Japan, out of 70,000 trees in the coastal area, a lone pine was able to withstand the tsunami.

Eventually, the tree succumbed to all the salt water in the soil and died. It was estimated the tree was about 173 years old (actually not as old as the original estimates). The city has rebuilt the pine as a memorial. The cost for restoration was enormous, though, exceeding $1.5 million. You can find many people on the Internet criticizing the decision for the restoration, saying that the money could have been better spent elsewhere… True, but sometimes you need to have something to help build hope, and remembering the tree’s amazing survival is something which local people can use to help give themselves strength to rebuild the community and their own lives.

PBS Digital Studios did this video using a scientific method to calculate the odds of finding love...

And they’ve scientifically proven it’s darn hard!

Click the above image for the video.

What I’d like to point out, though, is that their conclusion was there are 871 people in New York City who would meet the criteria for Ann. However, I think it requires a different approach in that you really only find out if the person is the right person for you if you have a chance to meet them and talk to them. How many distinct people meet that criteria per day? Let’s say 20 per day? That is, you may meet more than 20 per day, let’s say 40-50, but the next day, they are many of the same people. Of course, if she’s outgoing, then the odds increase because rather than just getting a chance to talk with them, if she finds someone who is attractive, then she may take the initiative to talk to that person. But let’s say she’s not that outgoing, so it’s 20 per day. In a non-leap year, that’s 7300 people per year. Using their formula, that’s 0.077 people per year who meet Ann’s criteria. That means, the odds are that it will take 13 years to meet just 1 person who meet the criteria. (OK, it’s been a long time since my probabilities class, so it is rusty, but I think that’s close enough.) If she meets fewer than 7300 distinct people per year, the odds are a lot worse! No wonder true love seems so elusive! And now it’s scientifically proven!

Also, I wonder what eating chocolate has to do with all of this. He could of at least offered to share.
Of course, you can increase your odds by changing your criteria. If you don’t worry about the attractiveness part or the education part or even the age part, but just whether she’s naked and brought beer, then your odds may go way up!
